A Tax Break? MetroNews Talkline, March 13, 2009 Both the state Senate and House of Delegates are now considering proposed bills that would lift the sales tax charged on new and used vehicle purchases in West Virginia for one month. Ruth Lemmon with the West Virginia Auto and Truck Dealers Association says it's about getting people back into the show rooms. "The whole issue here is to generate some activity in the dealerships which we're not seeing that much of." When you buy a new or used vehicle, right now, in West Virginia, you pay a 5% tax for title and licensing. What used to be called the 'privilege tax' generates an average of $200 million for the Road Fund every year. Lemmon says lifting the tax for 30 days would cost the Road Fund about $15 million. "We're trying to do anything we can to keep our employees here. We're trying to keep the revenues flowing to the governmental agencies and, as the auto industry goes, so goes the rest of the economy in this country," Lemmon said. S.B. 388 and H.B. 3072 are just beginning to move through the legislative process. Lemmon was a guest on Friday's MetroNews Talkline which originated at the State Capitol.
