W.Va. group offers to pay gas taxes

Publication:  Associated Press
Release Date: 07/08/2008

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) A West Virginia group dedicated to improved transportation is offering a gas tax holiday of its own.

West Virginians for Better Transportation will pay for an average year's worth of state gas taxes for a weekly contest winner between this week and Labor Day.

To enter, people simply have to provide some contact information after using the gas tax calculator on the group's Web site, www.keepwvmoving.org.

Winners will get a $250 gasoline debit card, which is about the average West Virginia motorist's annual gas tax cost.

The group wants to draw attention to what it calls a relative bargain on gas taxes, which help fund road maintenance and construction. About 60 percent of the state Road Fund comes from gas taxes.
