  • Vehicle miles of travel in West Virginia increased 79 percent between 1980 and 2000, increasing from 11 billion to 19 billion miles.

  • Eight percent of West Virginia’s urban Interstates and 21 percent of the state’s rural Interstates are considered congested because they carry traffic levels that result in significant delays during peak travel hours.

  • While the U.S. average is only 20 percent, West Virginia is responsible for 92 percent (36,703 miles) of the public highway mileage in the state.

  • Despite its relatively small size, West Virginia maintains the sixth largest network of state roads in the nation.

  • West Virginia is only one of four states having jurisdiction over both state and county roads (the other states are Delaware, North Carolina, and Virginia).
